History of Cullinan
Situated near the historic town of Cullinan, where the world’s largest diamond was discovered. Kiasoma has welcomed guests for many years. Initially, operating as a wellness and spa retreat, we now function as a privately owned bush lodge, and are dedicated to providing you with an unforgettable experience.
Moreover, the charming town of Cullinan ranks as a key stop along the South African diamond route. It gained fame in 1907 when miners discovered the Cullinan Diamond, which at 3,106.75 carats, remains the largest gem quality rough diamond ever found. Today, Cullinan not only operates an active open cast mine but it also continues to be the world’s third-largest diamond producer. Thus, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and ongoing legacy of diamond mining.
In addition to its diamond fame, Cullinan boasts a thriving tourism industry. The Cullinan mine welcomes visitors for tours and you can also explore various attractions. Ranging from exhilarating zip lining experiences to golfing on the heritage courses.
Dinokeng Game Reserve
Furthermore, the province of Cullinan lies within the Dinokeng conservation area, home to the largest wildlife sanctuary in Gauteng: the Dinokeng Game reserve.
Notably, Dinokeng is malaria free and stands as the only reserve in Gauteng where you can find the Big Five – lion, leopard, black rhinoceros, African bush elephant, and African buffalo. In addition, you can observe a variety of other wildlife, including white rhino, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, brown hyenas, wildebeests, red hartebeests, tsessebe, eland, kudu, impalas, antelopes, monkeys, hippopotamus and crocodiles, all in their natural habitat.
The name Dinokeng is derived from the language of the Botswana and Pedi people, translating roughly to “a place of rivers”. Thanks to its proximity to water sources, grasses and bushland, this unique environment is also home to over 360 species of bird. As a result you can experience one of South Africa’s premier bird-watching areas right here.
